Undergraduate Workshops:
“All in a Day’s Work: How Work Impacts the Health and Wellbeing of our Communities” by Kevin Riley
This workshop will provide an introduction to the field of occupational health and explore the role of work in contributing to wider health inequalities. We will look at the wide range of hazards workers may face on the job and consider the evidence for disproportionate exposures by race/ethnicity, immigration status, and other social characteristics. We will also discuss methods for improving workplace safety and health conditions—from strengthening enforcement of labor standards to empowering workers to serve as their own advocates. The workshop will emphasize the importance of recognizing the connections between work and health within a community medicine context
“Becoming a Competitive Applicant for Medical School” by Monica Perkins
What makes someone an ideal candidate for medical school admissions? This workshop is designed to cover frequently asked questions about medical school admissions at UCLA.
“Engaging in the Community and Standing Out as a Pre-Med” by Jhaimy Fernandez
Learn to differentiate yourself from the typical pre-med by using your strengths to start your own community service project, club or initiative. Learn the marketing, organization and leadership skills to motivate others to support your cause. You do not have to wait to be a doctor to start helping others!

“Frida Kahlo: The Forgotten Medical Student” by Dr. Fernando Antelo
In this lecture, the audience will explore the life and health of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo from a medical humanities perspective. We will view selected artworks and examine how Kahlo used art to
communicate her struggles with health. This workshop targets aspiring and practicing health care professionals.

This workshop will focus on analyzing various leadership models including current research, various methods of executing and managing leadership tasks will be discussed. An emotional intelligence activity will be done and a discussion of student leadership roles will follow.

This workshop will provide students with an overview of the admissions process for applicants to Public Health programs.

In this workshop you will learn about the different types of Medical School Interviews, what to expect during interview day, and what you can do to prepare. You will also have an opportunity to ask any questions you may have about the application process!
“Navigating Medicine as LGBTQ+”
This panel will consist of queer medical students, public health graduate student, and pre-medical undergraduates. This panel will discuss how they navigated their journey to medicine, while staying true to their authentic self! You do not have to identify as LGBTQ+ to attend this workshop! Allies are welcome!
Plastic Surgery Workshop by Dr. Luis Macias
Interested in specializing in Plastic Surgery as a future physician? This workshop will describe the life of an Aesthetic and Reconstructive Plastic Surgeon and describe the field in depth.
“Putting the Pieces Together: An Introduction to Personal Statements” by Stephanie Clavijo
The personal statement is an opportunity for applicants to show the admissions committee a brief snapshot of their lives and passion for medicine. How do we decided what experiences are worthy of being included? In this workshop, you will receive tips and strategies from previous medical school applicants on how to synthesize an essay that reflects not only your growth, but the most important question of all: Why do you want to be a doctor?
Sanando Juntos: The Healing Power of Community Acupuncture by Julie Grados
The healing power of acupuncture lies in its ability to activate the body's own mechanism to self heal simply by inserting very fine needles at certain points. Sanando juntos is about coming together to create health and maintain wellness through the use of acupuncture in a community setting. It provides a healing experience that isn't isolating- the healing is shared with family, friends, and the entire community. Community acupuncture is the healing of self and the healing of the whole community.
“Social Justice and Activism – Don’t Mourn, Organize!” by Dr. Puvvula
This workshop will address the barrage of issues being unleashed by the Trump administration and will discuss what we can act on. This lecture will serve as a primer on activism.
Undocumented Students in Health Professions
The AB540 project intends to address funding options for higher education of undocumented youth. We intend to embed in this workshop experiences of the undocumented community concerning academia and with that, we hope to address mental health issues that may disproportionately affect undocumented students. Lastly, we hope to direct students to resources particularly for undocumented students pursuing health sciences.
