High School workshops:
“A Nursing Journey” by William Gallegos
Come learn more about William Gallegos, BS, BSN, RN. Will was born and raised in South-East Los Angeles. During his undergrad he became one of the founding members of Chicanos/Latinos for Community Medicine (CCM) at Cerritos Community College.In 2003, he transferred to San Francisco State University as a Premed Student and majored in Physiology . Numerous obstacles prevented William from applying to medical school. In 2014, after seven years of working as a mechanic, William decided to pursue a career in nursing. In 2016, with the support of family and friends he was able to excel to the top of his class and receive a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from West Coast University along with a registered nursing license.
“Becoming an Empowered Pre-Health Student” by Anabel Alcaraz UCLA Medical Student
Are you a first-generation college student interested in pursuing a health profession? Come to this talk to learn how to maximize your college experience and hear about the importance of self-advocacy during your pre-health journey.
“Breaking Down the Obstacle: A discussion & Panel on the Problems Students of Color Face within Higher-Ed” by Mentors Empowering and Nurturing Through Education at UCLA
Through this workshop Mentors Empowering and Nurturing Through Education at UCLA aims to discuss obstacles that are commonly faced by first generation college bound and/or students of color. We will discuss the school to prison pipeline and the deficit theories that are presented as obstacles for students. At the end students will engage in a Q & A with the UCLA presenters.
“College Life” by Sigma Alpha Zeta Sorority, Hermanas Unidas de UCLA, Kappa Sigma Fraternity
This workshop will provide information on the social aspect of college. Three different UCLA on campus organizations will be sharing their experience with their respective organizations and will provide insight on the way students can get involved in college.
“Embracing LGBTQ Latinidad through Health” by Albert Martinez La Familia de UCLA Chairperson
This workshop focuses on the health disparities that exist for Latinxs and LGBTQ people as separate identities and the intersectional experience. It will focus on different topics of health such as mental health, sexual health, lack of access to health, and more
“Empowering and Growing the Future Health Professional In You” by Mandla Kayise, President & CEO of New World Education
With just a few interactive activities and exercises, this workshop will get you starting creating the blueprint for your empowerment and success as a student, as a person and as a future health professional. You will join literally thousands of our former students who have used our tools and strategies to not only become more successful but to reach for their full potential as health professionals and in dozens of other professional fields. “Financial Aid” by Jessica Iniguez and Jeremy Phan, Financial Aid Advisors
This workshop will provide information on the ways you can obtain financial aid to help pay for college. The financial aid representatives will go over what the Financial Aid Application is and the ways you can pay for college.
“Get the 411 about Dentistry” by Elisabeth Perez, HSDA Co-Chair & Miriam Herrera,HSDA Pre-Health Outreach Co-Chair
The workshop will include an overview of dentistry as a profession, reasons to pursue dentistry, why dentistry is a public health issue, and steps students can take toward pursuing a career in dentistry. Presenters are all current UCLA School of Dentistry students who each took a unique path to ultimately enter
“GOOGLE Search: Do I have to be a science major to be pre-med or pre-health?” by Alexis Velasquez, Karla Lopez and Diana Lazo, UCLA CCM Alumni
This workshop will consist of a panel of three CCM Alumni representatives. Two of these students were pre-med students at UCLA and were non-science majors. The third panelist was a pre-health student. Do you want be a doctor? Do you love history, art or any other humanities topic? If you've answered yes to any of these questions, or if you ever had to GOOGLE any of them join us and learn from past CCM Alumni who want to go to medical school or pursue a masters in Public Health.
“Harbor-UCLA Summer Urban Health Fellowship” by Maria Rosales & Tamar Galindo
This information session will cover the Summer Urban Health Fellowship, a 6-week long summer program that gives High School and Undergraduate students the opportunity to shadow doctors in community clinics, organize and run health fairs as a part of a committee, participate in community based research, and get mentorship from undergraduate students, medical students, and doctors.
“How to Find and Win Scholarships” by Helga Zambrano
This scholarship workshop will give an overview to high school students/prospective college applicants on the resources available on how to search for and even win scholarships. I will also give an overview of the general resources available at the UCLA Scholarship Resource Center. This presentation will mainly focus on scholarship searches that are specific to health/medical field majors, but it will offer scholarship search tips for alternative majors as well. The presentation will have a break-out session for the last 15 minutes, where students will collaboratively work on a self-profile exercise.
“How to Write a Successful UC Personal Statement” by Julia Eberhardt
In this workshop, you will learn the components that contribute to writing a successful UC Personal Statement. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn persuasive writing techniques, tips, and the “do’s and the don’ts” for a college admission essay. Obtain advice on how to write a compelling personal statement to get accepted to the UC of your choice!
“Sanando Juntos: The Healing Power of Community Acupuncture” by Julie Grados
The healing power of acupuncture lies in its ability to activate the body's own mechanism to self heal simply by inserting very fine needles at certain points. Sanando juntos is about coming together to create health and maintain wellness through the use of acupuncture in a community setting. It provides a healing experience that isn't isolating- the healing is shared with family, friends, and the entire community. Community acupuncture is the healing of self and the healing of the whole community.
“The Birds and the Bees” by Astred Castro and Saraiyah Hatter (Black Latino Aids Project at UCLA)
Did you know that youth between the ages of 15 and 24 have the highest rates of HIV/AIDS and STI's? Does the age range include you? If so, listen up. Join us in discussing the importance of safe sex practices and the meaning of consensual sex. But...there's more. Let's talk teenage pregnancy and its impact on health.
“The Power of the Pink Dot” by Jefferson Villatoro, DOTOrg Outreach Director
With the ability to heal and protect itself from injury and disease, the human body truly is extraordinary. However, the body does have its limits and when organs begin to fail a transplant is often necessary to save a patient's life. Unfortunately, at the current rate approximately 22 people die each day while waiting for a transplant. Come learn about the immensely important, yet seldom talked about, issue of organ donation and how one person is able to save eight lives and affect 50 more, one pink dot at a time.
“The Undocumented Student Journey: Financing Your Way Through College” by Kenia Garcia, IDEAS at UCLA
Undocumented students are some of the most hard-working and resilient individuals. However, sometimes money may become an issue when trying to attain higher education. This workshop will inform undocumented students what it means to be AB540 and will discuss the college experience. It will also provide undocumented students with resources and ways they can finance their way through college such as the DREAM Act and outside scholarships available to undocumented students.
“ The 411 on Hypertension Screenings” by Ashley Ramos, SREC Hypertension Committee Chair
Have you ever walked into the doctor’s office and had your blood pressure checked? Have you ever wondered what that machine does and how people learn to use it? Well join Ashley as she gives you the 411 on what a hypertension screen is so that you too can practice using a blood pressure cuff. Learn what the difference is between an automatic hypertension machine and a manual hypertension one is!
